More details have emerged about the alleged role a New England Patriots locker room attendant played in the “deflategate” scandal.
On Monday, Fox Sports reported there is video showing the attendant taking footballs the Patriots provided before the AFC title game against Indianapolis from the game officials’ locker room and into another room at Gillette Stadium before bringing them out to the field.
Late Monday night NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk added several additional details, all attributed to an NFL source. According to the report, the locker room attendant took two bags of 12 footballs each — one for the Patriots and the other for the Colts — into a bathroom consisting of a toilet and sink with a door that locks from the inside. He remained in there for approximately 90 seconds, the report said.
All of that information was obtained from a surveillance video that the Patriots turned over to the NFL early in the investigation, according to Pro Football Talk.
Obviously we don’t know what happened in that bathroom during that time. But we do know that he at least had the opportunity to do something shady with the balls if that’s what he wanted to do.
Is a minute-and-a-half enough time to take two pounds of air out 11 balls that were found to have been deflated? Who knows. Maybe he has a system.
Chances are, we’ll never know exactly what went on behind that bathroom door. And unless it has something to do giving the home team an advantage on the field, it’s probably better that way.
