Stephan El Shaarawy put Italy ahead in the first half, firing home after Riccardo Montolivo’s lay off but Mathieu Valbuena levelled instantly as the Marseille playmaker skipped past two attempted challenges from Marco Verratti, cut inside Andrea Barzagli and then curled in a brilliant shot into the far-top corner.
Substitute Bafetimbi Gomis struck the winner in the second half as he turned home Patrice Evra’s cross-shot.
One centurion, six debutants and England’s fifth-youngest player of all time – but it was Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who scored four to wreck Roy Hodgson’s unbeaten start as manager in a game that ended 4-2.
Goals from Danny Welbeck and Steven Caulker had overturned an early deficit, but Ibrahimovic was the star of the show as, in stoppage time, he sent an overhead kick sailing into an empty net from fully 25 yards to cap a masterful display.
Netherlands and Germany played out a low-key goalless draw in their friendly at the Amsterdam ArenA, with both sides missing a number of key players due to injury.
Mesut Ozil, Mario Gomez and Bastian Schweinsteiger were among the big names missing for Germany, while the Dutch were without injured duo Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder.
Dutch substitute Darryl Janmaat almost broke the deadlock in the 76th minute when he brought an excellent save out of Neuer, who stretched to tip his powerful 20-yard effort around the post.
But Germany should have won it in injury time when Reus blazed wide from the middle of the box.
Robert Cornthwaite scored a late winner on his Socceroos return as Australia came from behind to beat South Korea 2-1 at Hwaseong.
Cornthwaite, who plays his club football for Chunnam Dragons in South Korea, scrambled the ball home from close range with three minutes left on the clock after Nikita Rukavytsya levelled for Australia in the first half following Lee Dong-Gook’s early strike for the hosts.
Cornthwaite was a late replacement in Holger Osieck’s injury-hit side and made his first appearance for the national team three years after his only previous cap.
The former Adelaide player was on hand to capitalise on poor defending by South Korea when he bundled the ball past goalkeeper Young-Kwang Kim when the hosts failed to clear a late corner in the 87th minute.
Lee put the home side in front when he volleyed home in the 11th minute from inside the penalty area before Rukavytsya equalised two minutes before the break.
Mix Diskerud’s last-gasp strike helped the United States, who twice came from behind, claim a creditable 2-2 draw against Russia in Krasnodar.
Fedor Smolov put the hosts ahead in the ninth minute after capitalising on a mistake from Danny Williams to score from a narrow angle although Jurgen Klinsmann’s men levelled with 14 minutes remaining as Michael Bradley finished with aplomb after being teed up by Juan Agudelo’s header.
Russia thought they had claimed the bragging rights when Roman Shirokov scored from the spot after Clarence Goodson had challenged Artem Dzyuba in the area but Diskerud claimed an unlikely equaliser with a strike from just outside the area for his first international goal.
Saudi Arabia claimed a famous goalless draw against Argentina, who played a relatively full strength side with Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria and Javier Mascherano amongst their number.
The South American side pushed strongly for a winner at the end but were made to pay for poor finishing from Aguero and Wigan striker Franco Di Santo, who was making his international debut.
Neymar missed a late penalty as Brazil settled for a draw with Colombia in their 1,000th ever match.
Santos forward Neymar scored a second-half equaliser for Brazil but then spurned a golden chance to win the friendly, which was played in the United States. Colombia snatched the lead just before half time when James Rodriguez crossed for Juan-Guillermo Cuadrado, and his shot went in off the right-hand post.
A brace from David Lafata in the first 10 minutes propelled Czech Republic to a comfortable 3-0 win over Slovakia at the Andruv Stadium.
The 31-year-old striker scored in the third and sixth minutes to set the Czechs on their way while Borek Dockal sealed the win in the 72nd minute.
Oleksandr Kucher’s 33rd-minute strike gave Ukraine a 1-0 success in Bulgaria.
China and New Zealand played out a 1-1 draw in their friendly at the Hongkou Stadium. Zhao Peng opened the scoring for China in the 32nd minute before Chris Wood equalised for the All Whites one minute before the half time whistle.
