After his team hammered Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in their Champions League second leg, Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri said he believes his Serie A club can do even better as they move on to the quarterfinals.
Juventus held a 2-1 advantage going into the away game vs. Jurgen Klopp’s team and they quickly extended the lead just three minutes in as a Carlos Tevez wonder-strike blew past Dortmund keeper Roman Weidenfeller.
Alvaro Morata added a second goal in the 70th minute off a Tevez assist and then the Argentine put the game completely away in the 79th minute with a second goal to secure Juventus’ spot in the Champions League last 8 by a final aggregate score of 5-1.
“The work was done all together between the club, team and coach. The players allowed nothing to Borussia and I think over two legs they only had one real shot on target,” said Allegri.
“It is an important result for Italian football, especially in the way it came about. This squad has everything needed to play even better than they did tonight.”
Allegri said the team must improve as they move on to the quarterfinals, but was happy with how they played in the second half without French midfielder Paul Pogba, who left at the 30-minute mark with an apparent injury.
Juventus players celebrate after their 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund that put them through to the Champions League quarterfinals.
“There was a moment of confusion when Paul Pogba went off for Andrea Barzagli.
“In general we were tactically astute and didn’t give away many free kicks either, apart from early on with Arturo Vidal.”
The Juventus boss also had high praise for his defence and for Tevez.
“Not only does [Tevez] score goals, but he also helps his teammates and works for the midfield too.
“It is a deserved victory, but we still look forward and can do even better.
“I always believed this team could comfortably play with four at the back, as few sides in Europe have the players Juve do. I think this tactical versatility is a big advantage.”
