According to the report, Ortega, 50, was able to speak with police on Saturday afternoon from her bed at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. They had delayed charging her because she was being intubated and treated for self-inflicted wounds after she stabbing herself in the throat and cutting her wrists.
A police spokesperson declined to share more information with the Times about Ortega’s motive or her health and when she is expected to be released from the hospital. She currently remains there under police guard.
Ortega’s relatives have told the Times that she had sought help from a mental health professional before the killings. They also said she had financial problems.
On Oct. 25, Marina Krim came home from a swimming lesson with her young daughter to find two of her children, Lucia, 6, and Leo, 2, dead of knife wounds in the bathtub. According to police at the time, as Krim walked into the bathroom, she saw Ortega stab herself in the throat.
