• Moyes ‘disappointed’ by whole team
The England international brought up a double-century of goals for the club in the 4-2 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen, and took his tally to 202 with a free-kick in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.
He is now only nine goals behind Jack Rowley, who struck 211 times for United either side of World War II, with just Denis Law (237) and Sir Bobby Charlton (249) ahead of him.
And Charlton, the World Cup winner who captained United’s 1968 European Cup-winning side, told United Review: “I’ve spoken to Wayne and I’ve told him he’s doing really, really well. Fantastically well. I’ll lose no sleep over it at all if Wayne beats my record. It will be something else for the club to be proud of.”
Law, a team-mate of Charlton’s at Old Trafford from 1961 to 1973, added: “I wasn’t surprised to see Wayne reach 200 goals for United. I said years ago that as long as he stayed fit he would become the highest scorer and I have no doubt he’ll break the record.”
