Liz Lemon isn’t exactly a glamour girl, but it seems that Tina Fey appreciates her 30 Rock character’s love of all things casual.
“It’s weird,” she tells PEOPLE, “I almost don’t have time during the year to wear clothes. I sort of roll out of bed into some pair of jeans and the top of my pajamas, come [to work] and then put on clothes. Then at the end of the day I put the pajama top back on and go home.”
Citing James Jeans and Citizens of Humanity as her favorite brands — “What I wear on the show is what I then steal and wear at home for a long time,” she jokes — the actress says she grew up wearing Wranglers. Her 6-year-old daughter Alice, however, is a bit more fashion forward.
“She’s not into princesses anymore,” Fey admits. “One day she said, ‘Mom, I’m not into that. I’m into fashion.’”
However, Fey is not letting her get into serious makeup — at least anytime soon. “[Alice] has play makeup, or she’s played with my makeup. But I’m hoping [she doesn't really wear it] till at least 14,” the actress says. “I was maybe in eighth grade when I got some, like, colored lip gloss or poorly applied base.”
These days, Fey (Garnier’s newest spokesmodel) has her makeup expertly applied for red carpets and television appearances. However, she doesn’t feel 100 percent ready to face the world until she’s happy with the way she looks. “If you get [to an event] and feel like you’re in a costume that someone made you wear, you’re in for trouble,” she explains.
Luckily, she has pals like Alec Baldwin looking out for her. “I don’t think he would ever come up to me and be like, ‘You’re pretty,’” she jokes. “But I know that he does not like it when my character looks disgusting. He mostly just tries to prevent me from looking terrible. He’s got my back in that way.” For more with Fey, pick up the March 26 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.
