As the London Games come to a close after two weeks of gold-medal triumphs and crushing disappointments, the Spice Girls are set to perform at the Sunday finale.
“If the opening ceremony was the wedding, then we’re the wedding reception,” music director David Arnold tells the Daily Telegraph.
Also expected to perform in the show, which will include British hits from the past five decades: The Who, George Michael, Muse, the Pet Shop Boys and Annie Lennox.
But it’s the Girls who’ve garnered the most attention so far. Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell were spotted rehearsing atop black cabs (bedazzled for the occassion!) in London on Thursday.
Earlier this year, Chisholm (aka “Sporty”) made it clear to Olympic organizers that she really, really, really wanted the group to be included.
“I’d be really upset if the Spice Girls weren’t included in the Olympics, whether it be the opening or closing ceremonies or any other playlists, because I think we absolutely represented Britain in the ‘90s,” she said. “I think it would be a real shame if we weren’t acknowledged in some way at the Olympics.”
Is there a gold medal for best zig-a-zig ah?
