As the prime suspect in his wife Monica's April 2010 murder, Bruce Beresford-Redman has been jailed for more than a year and hasn't spoken publicly about the death. Now locked away in an isolated Mexican cell, the former Emmy-nominated Survivor producer is breaking his silence and proclaiming his innocence.
"Everyone seems to have decided that I killed my wife," he tells 48 Hours Mystery in an episode airing Saturday at 10 p.m. "I didn't kill my wife – I really didn't."
Beresford-Redman was extradited from the U.S. to Mexico earlier this month.
His wife Monica's naked and beaten body was found in a sewer at the Moon Palace Resort in Cancun, where the couple was vacationing with their two young children.
The former reality producer tells 48 Hours that he submitted evidence to Mexican court that exonerates him, but he's been ordered to stand trial.
"For anyone who really believes … that you're innocent until you're proven guilty, please take a look at the evidence," says Beresford-Redman. "Or in this case, the absolute complete lack of evidence."
But even if he is proven innocent, Beresford-Redman says there is no happy ending to the tragic death of his wife, 42.
"This is not CSI or Law & Order or any of those shows where at the end we have a satisfying resolution," he says. "I doubt that there will ever be a satisfying resolution for this because the evidence is gone. Even if I do manage to get off, I don't know if Monica's killers will ever really be caught."
