Derek Fisher made himself into a great NBA player by knowing his weaknesses and turning them into strengths. He was just fast enough to take innumerable charges; just tall enough to dive after every loose ball; just accurate enough from beyond the arc to rip an opponent's heart out, night after night.
Here's a prediction: No Fish, no ring.

I must take issue with Bill Plaschke. No question it's difficult to trade a player of Derek Fisher's quality, caliber and character, but to chide the Lakers for a money dump is wrong.
The new salary cap hamstrings teams, especially those already carrying a big salary load and are already over the cap. They have little maneuvering room for trades and/or signing free agents. Worse, the Lakers were aging out.
This is not easy for the team and certainly not Derek Fisher, but, to his credit, there was interest in him and from a quality team. He said, "It's about still having an impact on this team." Well, even in the twilight of his career, he has ... again.
Good luck, Derek, we'll miss you.
