If you thought Voldemort was gone for good, think again.
The Harry Potter villain made an appearance at Friday night’s Olympic opening ceremony, and he was bigger and badder than ever.
The 40-foot-tall inflatable Voldemort, part of a tribute to British children’s literature, was joined by the evil Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – but it wasn’t long before many a Mary Poppins impersonator swooped in to scare him away. (Plus, J.K. Rowling read from Peter Pan!)
The opening ceremony also featured a video of James Bond (Daniel Craig) and the Queen parachuting into the Olympic Stadium; a parade of iconic (and recent) British tunes from songs by Queen, the Sex Pistols, Prodigy, Dizzee Rascal and the Rolling Stones paired with day-glo-styled dancers. Plus there was comic sequence featuring Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) “performing” along with the London Symphony Orchestra, then zoning out and daydreaming to “Chariots of Fire.”
And that was all before the athletes marched in to take the field in the Parade of Nations.
