El presidente de Francia y candidato a la reelección, Nicolas Sarkozy, calificó hoy de monstruo y de fanático a Mohamed Merah, el asesino confeso de Toulouse que hoy fue abatido en el operativo desplegado para capturarle."Esos crímenes no son los de un loco. Un loco es irresponsable. Esos crímenes son los de un fanático y un monstruo", indicó en Estrasburgo, en su primer acto de campaña desde que el pasado lunes se cancelaran temporalmente todas las actividades relacionadas con los comicios de abril y mayo próximos.
El jefe del Estado, que horas antes se congratuló de que Francia hubiera mostrado "sangre fría y determinación" ante el asesinato de 3 militares, 3 niños judíos y el padre de 2 de ellos los pasados 11, 15 y 19 de marzo en Toulouse y Montauban, agregó que intentar buscar una explicación a esas matanzas sería faltar a la moral.
En ese mitin, Sarkozy calificó de odiosos esos 3 atentados "contra niños y soldados desarmados", y consideró que con ellos se negaron los valores de Francia y se abatieron los principios de la República.
Esta comparecencia reanuda hoy de manera oficial la campaña, suspendida a principios de la semana por la matanza en una escuela judía de Toulouse, y retomada una vez que el cerco policial desplegado para capturar a Merah, francés de origen argelino, consiguió neutralizarle.
Ese joven, de 23 años de edad, murió hoy de un disparo en la cabeza lanzado por miembros del cuerpo de elite de la Policía, que según el ministro del Interior, Claude Guéant, actuaron en legítima defensa después de que el sospechoso saltara del balcón del edificio en el que se había atrincherado disparando a los agentes.
Contra el cese temporal de la campaña se habían manifestado el centrista François Bayrou y el candidato del Frente de Izquierda, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, al considerar que ese parón suponía conceder relevancia al asesino, quien dijo haber actuado en solitario en nombre de la organización terrorista Al Qaeda.
