But three years and more 560 million views later, their digital channel now has more subscribers than Beyoncé‘s.
The instrument-free quintet covers popular songs using just vocals, as seen in the film Pitch Perfect – in fact, the group snagged a role in the upcoming sequel, Pitch Perfect 2.
The troupe consists of lead vocalists Scott Hoying, 22, Kristie Maldonado, 21 and Mitch Grassi, 21, along with vocal bass Avi Kaplan, 25, and beatboxer Kevin Olusola, 25. Some of their most viral videos include a medley of Daft Punk songs, a version of Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive”, and most recently, Ariana Grande’s “Problem”.
Their latest song, a cover of Clean Bandit’s hit “Rather Be”, will be available on their upcoming EP – and PEOPLE is premiering the video.
“We’re huge fans of Clean Bandit, and we’re so excited to be covering this!” Grassi says.
