WASHINGTON — A day after being flattened in a collision with the right-field fence in Miami, Yasiel Puig experienced general soreness and was held out of the Dodgers lineup as a precaution.
The club got better news Monday about pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu and catcher A.J. Ellis.
The Dodgers say they subjected Puig to battery of examinations — including a SCAT3 standardized tool used to test for symptoms of a concussion — Sunday and Monday and he passed each one. However, the outfielder complained of a headache after riding a stationary bicycle, and head trainer Stan Conte kept Puig out of batting practice and other baseball-related activities and would not say when he might be available to play.
“We’ll see where he’s at tomorrow,” Manager Don Mattingly said of Puig, who has a six-game hitting streak and is batting .373 with 16 runs batted in over his last 14 games. “You’ve got be cautious with him.”
Four years ago, baseball adopted a seven-day disabled list for players diagnosed with concussion symptoms, but Mattingly said that possibility had not been discussed with Puig.
“I haven’t heard anything about concussions,” Mattingly said, adding that he was “fairly optimistic” Puig could be available to play as early as Tuesday.
The reports about Ryu and Ellis were encouraging. Left-hander Ryu was cleared to start a throwing program Tuesday and Ellis could be set out on a short minor league rehabilitation assignment by the end of the week.
Ryu, who went on the disabled list last Friday because of shoulder inflammation, was examined in Los Angeles by team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Ellis, who hasn’t played since April 5 and had knee surgery April 8, is with the team on its trip and has been catching bullpen sessions and running the bases during pregame drills.
