Kirkland, 31, a former England international, had just conceded a 77th minute equaliser to Michael Tonge during the Friday night game when a man ran onto the pitch from the Leppings Lane End of the ground and struck him in the face.
With Kirkland grounded the man returned to the stand among other away fans, while a number of other visiting supporters ran on and off the pitch.
Support staff were quickly on hand to attend to Kirkland who was treated for some time before completing the match, although he was visibly shaken.
