Kemp, Puig exchange words 0:41
9/15/14: Don Mattingly pulls Yasiel Puig to the side after an exchange between Puig and Matt Kemp
DENVER — Cameras from Colorado’s broadcast caught Matt Kemp in a verbal exchange with fellow outfielder Yasiel Puig in the Dodgers’ 11-3 victory over the Rockies on Monday during the team’s eight-run sixth inning.
Puig walked and moved to second on Adrian Gonzalez‘s two-run single. After Kemp struck out, Puig came home to score on Hanley Ramirez‘s double — the sixth of seven hits that inning — and Kemp followed Puig through the dugout, giving him an earful before manager Don Mattingly calmly separated the two. Mattingly then pulled Puig aside for a private talk with the assistance of an interpreter.
Mattingly was equally as calm when asked about what went down postgame, calling it “family business.” But that didn’t stop him from comparing his club to a baseball dynasty famous for being functionally dysfunctional.
“Just talking in the dugout, same old things,” Mattingly said. “We’re like the A’s. The ’72 A’s.”
Kemp, whose two-run homer in the first drove in Puig, also had a reply ready when he was asked about the incident following the Dodgers’ eighth win in their last 10 games.
“It’s a good game we played today, huh?,” Kemp said with a grin. “Go Dodgers.”
