LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers pulled out all the stops to welcome fans to Dodger Stadium for Opening Day on Monday against the Giants.
Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax threw out the first pitch to 1988 Cy Young Award winner and World Series MVP Orel Hershiser. It appeared Magic Johnson would throw the first pitch before manager Don Mattingly walked to the mound and signaled for Koufax.
The organization celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1963 championship team and the 25th anniversary of the 1988 championship club. The Dodgers recognized Maury Wills and Tommy Davis from the 1963 team and Tommy Lasorda from the 1988 club.
The Dodgers showed off $100 million in stadium improvements that include: new high-definition video boards in left field and right field, a new sound system, a Wi-Fi network, new concession stands, renovated bathrooms and designated areas for kids to play.
There was a moment of silence for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.
Aloe Blacc sang the national anthem, while Chris Mann sang “God Bless America.” Blue Man Group also performed before the game in center field.
The organization also acknowledged Hall of Fame announcers Jaime Jarrin, in his 55th season, and Vin Scully, in his 64th season. The Dodgers are the only Major League team with two announcers recognized by the Hall of Fame.
The crowd rose to its feet as fireworks exploded when each Dodgers starter was introduced before the game.
