SAN DIEGO — Benches cleared, and that was just about it, at the end of the seventh inning in Tuesday night’s game between the Dodgers and Padres, which San Diego won, 2-1.
Logan Forsythe grounded into a double play to end the bottom of the inning when Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis felt baserunner Everth Cabrera went out of his way to take him out and appeared to tell him so.
Cabrera appeared to apologize, but Shane Victorino came charging in from his left-field position and tempers flared. Nobody was ejected, but home-plate umpire Marty Foster issued warnings to both benches.
Ellis has reason to be wary on takeout slides, having been sent to the disabled list May 19 for six weeks when he was crushed on a slide by then-Cardinals infielder Tyler Greene and required emergency surgery. The Dodgers later had an incident when Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt took out Jerry Hairston on what they perceived to be a late takeout slide at second base.
