Jordan are one tie away from reaching their first ever World Cup finals.

Jordan kept their World Cup dream alive after prevailing 9-8 on penalties against Uzbekistan in Tuesday’s Asian qualifying play-off second leg in Tashkent.

After Saturday’s first leg in Amman ended in a 1-1 draw, hosts Uzbekistan drew first blood in the return with Anzur Ismailov opening the scoring after five minutes, only for Saeed Al Murjan to level things up three minutes before the interval.

With neither side able to find another goal in normal time, the match went into a period of extra time which was delayed by around quarter of an hour when the stadium floodlights failed in the 100th minute.

The match went to penalties with the scoreline unchanged after 120 minutes, and with Jordan leading the spot-kicks 9-8 the decisive moment came as Ismailov failed with his attempt from 12 yards.

Jordan now go through to the intercontinental play-off against the fifth-placed team from South America zone, where a place in next year’s finals in Brazil will be up for grabs.
