WWE held its annual SummerSlam pay-per-view on Sunday, and it was full of surprises. None bigger than former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, who was the special guest host of SummerSlam getting involved in the John Cena-Seth Rollins match. A look at the results:
RANDY ORTON vs. SHEAMUS
Sheamus won by hitting two brogue kicks. He earlier escaped being pinned after an RKO by rolling out of the ring.
PRIME TIME PLAYERS vs. NEW DAY vs. LOS MATADORES vs. LUCHA DRAGONS for the tag team titles
New Day, supposedly the heels in the match, were over big with the Brooklyn crowd. New Day won the title when Kofi Kingston pinned Fernando.
DOLPH ZIGGLER vs. RUSEV
The match ended in a double count out. Rusev had the Accolade on but let it go when he was distracted by Lana and left the ring to confront her. Ziggler, who had rolled out of the ring when Rusev let go of the Accolade, hit Rusev with a superkick, but neither man was able to beat the 10 count to get back in the ring. Look for this feud to continue in the next PPV in a mixed-tag match, featuring Lana and Summer Rae.
STEPHEN AMELL and NEVILLE vs. KING BARRETT and STARDUST
Amell, the star of “Arrow”, is very athletic and did some nice moves, including leaping off the top rope onto Barrett and Stardust at ringside. You know the producers of “Arrow” had to be cringing at that one. Neville pinned Barrett with the Red Arrow.
RYBACK vs. BIG SHOW vs. THE MIZ for the Intercontinental title
Ryback retained the title by pinning the Miz, who had been knocked out by Big Show. Ryback clotheslined Big Show out of the ring, then stole the pin.
ROMAN REIGNS & DEAN AMBROSE vs. BRAY WYATT & LUKE HARPER
Ambrose and Reigns used the old Road Warriors Doomsday Device on Wyatt, then Reigns speared Wyatt for the pin.
SETH ROLLINS vs. JOHN CENA, WWE world heavyweight title and U.S. title on the line
The best match of the night. They kicked out of each other’s finishers multiple times. The finish came after a ref bump. Jon Stewart ran down with a chair and looked at both men and teased hitting Rollins. He then turned and hit Cena. Rollins then gave Cena a pedigree for the pin to retain the heavyweight title and win the U.S. title. Stewart will apparently give his motive for hitting Cena tonight on “Monday Night Raw.”
TEAM BELLA vs. TEAM PCB vs. TEAM BAD
Becky Lynch pinned Brie Bella with a pump handle uranage, giving Team PCB the victory.
KEVIN OWENS vs. CESARO
Owens won with the pop-up powerbomb.
BROCK LESNAR vs. UNDERTAKER
Lesnar had Undertaker in the Kimura lock when Undertaker rolled Lesnar into a pinning position. Lesnar kicked out at one, but the bell rang. The ref walked over to the timekeeper and asked what was going on, that he never called for the bell. Undertaker gave Lesnar a low blow and put Lesnar in his finishing move. Lesnar passed out, giving Undertaker the victory. Afterward, replays showed that Undertaker had tapped out to the Kimura lock, which the timekeeper saw, so he rang the bell. The ref never saw the tap out, so never called for the bell.
The finish builds to a third match between the two, rumored to be Undertaker’s retirement match at next year’s WrestleMania.
